Maccabees and the Struggle with Paganism Essay Example for Free
Maccabees and the Struggle with Paganism Essay Maccabees were found in the books of the Old Testament. It narrated the Jewish historical struggle in their religious traditions. Around 175 B. C. there was a monarch known as Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus the third of Syria that ruled the Jews. Jewish people were known to be faithful in the Law given by Moses. During their times, Roman empires were expanding and it included Judea in its empire. The Greeks and Romans both practice polytheism and paganism while the Jews were known as monotheistic. These major religious differences brought conflicts among the different civilizations and cultures. Antiochus and the Suppression of Judaism King Antiochus image as a king was that of a tyrannous, greedy and eccentric ruler. He was the foremost oppressor of the Jews. Even if Roman Empires were tolerant of other existing religious sects, the suppression of the Judaism occurred in their times. At first the Jews were free to exercise Judaism even with the presence of pressures in the virtues of Hellenism. But according to the book of First Maccabees there appeared in the land of Israel a group of traitorous Jews who had no regard for the law and they started to break from their customs. They came in terms with the Gentiles and followed their ways. They even asked the king for permission to follow their customs. This led them to built stadium similar to the Greeks. They even performed surgery to hide their circumcision and they also stop observing the Sabbath. Afterwards Antiochus performed other terrible things in the people of Judea and Jerusalem. He murdered the men in Jerusalem and plundered them with their gold, silver and other valuable things. He even destroyed the Jewish temples and force people to worship other gods and forget about their teachings and moral laws. ââ¬Å"The Awful Horrorâ⬠was committed to the Jewish people by King Antiochus. The Hasmonean or the Maccabees were the heroes that rebelled against paganism and restored Israelââ¬â¢s religious traditions.

The Taming Of The Shrew - Humor :: essays research papers
In The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare creates humour through his characters by creating false realities (as demonstrated by Petruchioââ¬â¢s behaviour and attire in the scene of his wedding) and by the use of subterfuge and mistaken identity (shown in the final scenes with the transformation of Kate and Biancaââ¬â¢s respective personas). He also uses irony quite extensively, especially towards the end of the play (as can be seen in the final ââ¬Ëwagerââ¬â¢ scene). The concept that ââ¬Ëthings are not always as they seemââ¬â¢ is quite evident in the events surrounding, and including, Petruchioââ¬â¢s wedding ceremony. This particular scene in the play demonstrates how the use of false realities (a real situation falsely presented in order to deliberately deceive) can be used to create humour. Biondello describes Petruchioââ¬â¢s appearance to Baptista, and by doing so sets up the expectations of the audience. He says that Petruchio comes wearing: New hat and old jerkin; a pair of old breeches thrice turned; a pair of boots that have been candle-cases, one buckled another laced; an old rusty swordeâ⬠¦with a broken hilt and chapeless; his horse hippedâ⬠¦with an old mothy saddle (Act III Scene II) This depiction of Petruchio conforms to Shakespeareââ¬â¢s technique of using false realities, in order to create humour. This can also be seen in the false identity that Petruchio puts forth in his quest for dominion over Kate (that of the eccentric egomaniac). However, these false realities are not enough by themselves, as the audience has nothing to go by but what they see before them, and so they are not to know that this is not Petruchioââ¬â¢s true personality, and so Shakespeare employs another essential element of humour: he lets the audience know what is truly transpiring, while the characters themselves remain oblivious to the truth. He does this using a soliloquy, in which Petruchio states the strategies he shall use in order to tame Kate: She ate no meat today nor none shall she eatâ⬠¦and as with the meat some undeserved fault Iââ¬â¢ll find about the making of the bedâ⬠¦ This is the way to kill a wife with kindnessâ⬠¦he that knows better how to tame a shrew, not let him speak (Act IV Scene I) This soliloquy serves to reinforce the fact that ââ¬Ëthings are not always as they seemââ¬â¢. So the knowledge gleaned from this soliloquy means that we find the other events involving Kate and Petruchio even more amusing, as we can see that it is nothing more than an elaborate game of chess, instigated by Petruchio.

Balance Sheets for the four quarters Essay
To evaluate how I utilized both budgets and pro-formas to ensure the adequacy of funds for providing production capacity that was needed to achieve the businesses goals. I want to first start with the definition of both pro-forma and budget; A budget is a basic idea that covers more than a few areas, all in all itââ¬â¢s a financial plan that is made to control costs for operations and results. It can be expressed in a multitude of numerical terms, it also can cover a certain period of time, short, intermediate and long term goals. A pro-forma is also a financial statement but it is prepared based upon assumptions of specific events and transactions that will hopefully occur in the Future, so basically a projected estimate using historical data to form a hypothesis of A financial outcome. The importance of both the pro-forma and budget were huge. Knowing going into the simulation how much seed money was going to be issued and how much additional money was coming in future investments, gave me an idea of how aggressive or conservative I could be. I was able to to set with an initial idea of how much I could spend for each factor needed moving forward. I was able to understand how much to market, how much to hire and how much I could afford for each of these tasks, as well as how much was coming into pay for future marketing and hires. Without advertising there are no customers, without a good sales and service staff there are no sales, or an ability to take care of the customer. In the opening quarter of the company I had a 2 million dollar start-up fund. My upfront expenses were approximately $530,000. I also chose to invest in a 3 month CD about $880,000, I made sure in my first endeavor to keep money available and not to over indulge. I took similar approaches going into each additional quarter; thereafter I wouldreview what was spent and estimate what was coming in and at that point I would hire more employees, adjust and raise benefits and increase marketing. My sales force and marketing expenses doubled from quarter two to quarter three and rose another 49 percent from quarter three to quarter four. These two factors in my opinion are the biggest of a profitable company, as sales and marketing grow and increase your company will thrive. At the end of each quarter I would review the results in these areas and make assessments on how much additional advertising I needed based upon sales numbers of the individual computers Mercedes and the Traveler. Based upon production and the competition I would review to see if I was going to increase the sales force and the compensation plan. The overall outcome of both areas had my company in NWL as the top employers at 83 out of a maximum 84 Score; also in regards to marketing effectiveness in NWL my company had a 92 out of a 97 maximum Score thatââ¬â¢s how I used the budget and pro-forma to help NWL achieve its goals. B.2. To evaluate how I employed Just In Time or JIT and Lean Operations to improve operating efficiency in my manufacturing facility, again as part of moving forward I want to define these two strategies before I explain how I use them. A) Just In Time or JIT is a production strategies to improve a business return on investment ROI by reducing in-process inventory as well as the associated carrying cost. This is done by only receiving goods as they are needed in the overall process, this helps cut overall inventory costs. B) Lean Operations simply supplies a customer with exactly what the customer needs when and only when the customer wants it without waste with this constant improvement, the emphasis and focus is on understanding the customer. Both JIT and Lean Operations can help with the overall increase of return on investment or ROI. In regards to how my simulation for NWL worked with these strategies, I would say in NWL ran overly Lean to a fault. I ran my operation capacity at 65 and my fixed capacity at 75 which was the second lowest of my competitors on both accounts. This was a huge negative for my company since it cost me over 2100 in lost sales. This would have increased my sales by approximately 33 percent which would have lowered the overall production costs and increase profits. I finished number 2 in sales with thehighest average price of computer. With a 33 percent increase in sales had I run a better production operation I would have had a lager profitability for a already profitable simulation. I did not key into the right places when I reviewed the early production numbers which cost me when it came to changing Operating and Fixed Capacities. I was overly cautious and my end result was indicative of this and caused big loses for NWL. B.3. Work Cells vs Traditional Straight Line Production. A Work Cell is defined to be a arrangement of machines and personnel that focuses on making a single product or family related products. Traditional Straight Line Production Is the standard assembly line style of manufacturing. Work may start in one department until that phase is complete. Then the product moves onto the next department for the next phase and the next and so on. The major difference between the two is efficiency and cost differentials. In a work cell method there are a multitude of benefits, from a reduction in work area needed, speed of production completion and number of associates needed just to name a few. All of which are in line with the thought process of JIT and Lean Operations which in turn increases ROI (return on investment). Five distinct advantages in the work cell vs the assembly line (1)Tasks are grouped, therefore inspections can be immediate. (2)Fewer workers are needed because of cross training. (3)The workers can access more of the work area. (4)Work areas are more efficiently balanced. (5)Enhanced communication based upon the shape of the work cell. These advantages can help lead to fewer employees reaching higher production numbers. Which in the simulation could have led to smaller start-up companies making more cost efficient production goals happen along with how well a micro computer company could make a work cell arrangement payoff positively. B.4. Evaluation of decisions involving inventory management in the Marketplace Simulation Inventory is defined as raw materials, work-in-progress goods and completely finished goods that are considered to be the portion of the businesses assets that are ready or will be ready for sale. Inventory represents one of the most important assets that most companies possess, because the turnover of inventory represents one of the primary sources of revenue generation and subsequent earnings for the company. In the marketplace simulation NWL was not very successful at inventory management in the attempt to run Just-in-Time (JIT) and Lean Operations, I ended up with sold out product and a enormous loss in sales. The lost sales totaled 50 percent of the total sales, which meant there could have been an additional 33 percent positive sales increase if the inventory was managed properly. These were losses of 1000 Travelers units and 1103 Mercedes units, those totals losses of $3,312,730 in gross profit. That was based upon the final sales and not taking into account any production savings by the increased sales volume. That could have increased gross profit by a minimum of 47 percent, if I had it to do over again paying more attention to the inventories would have been a possible windfall. B.5. A continuous improvement program that could have been used to improve and achieve quality assurance goals could have been either Employee Empowerment or Bench-marking. Employee Empowerment involves employees in every step of the production process. Employeeââ¬â¢s are on the front lines and know what is going on in every aspect and on all fronts. If employees find problems they can fix them or help fix them. Whom better in handling an issue then the ones most familiar with the process, if a shortcoming is found an experienced a periodic quality circle can address it. Itââ¬â¢s been proven that most quality issues are either material or the process, itââ¬â¢s not usually the employeeââ¬â¢s performance. If a Bench-marking program were to be implemented, the first step would be to established what the benchmark would be. Examples of which are; Percentage of Defects, Cost per unit processing time, Lost sales due to Out-of-Stocks and Customer Satisfaction Rates. If these type of factors were used in my situation, I would have used either Lost sales due to Out-of-Stocks or Customer Satisfaction Rates. mainly because I would have found out possibly a better way of keeping product in stock which could have reduced lost sales as well as a negative customer satisfaction due to no product. The benchmark team can find out what and how benchmark partners were doing to achieve their sales goals by tracking and keeping product stock, whereas to assure customer satisfaction. Then we could analyze the data from the partners and take the appropriate steps to move beyond and keep the process continually improving. C. 5.4.5. Communication and Provision of information As data are collected, they will be analyzed, summarized and provided to the Office of Risk Communication and Education (ORCE) or VDH leadership as requested. Information will be presented through immediate notification of significant findings and then likely transition to daily (or multiple times per day) reports. VDH leadership may establish a centralized depot for file and report sharing through the HAN and grant access to those folders based on roles and responsibilities. Additional intra-agency communication may occur through meetings and conference calls with LHD Directors and epidemiology staff. Of note, during the 2009 influenza pandemic, lessons were learned about information technology and informatics. Perhaps most notable was the fragmentation of data sources and resources across VDH. Development of an informatics plan early in the response to a radiological or nuclear incident is strongly recommended. In addition, calls to the local, regional and central offices may exceed the capacity for timely response; therefore, a public health information center might be established in the central office to centralize communication and respond to the increases in demand for communication with the public and healthcare providers. The Effects Of High-Profile Vehicles - 780 Words
Consumer sentiment for high-profile vehicles continues. A quick scan of the automotive landscape, especially in the United States, reveals that consumers are snapping up SUVs and pickup trucks to the detriment of coupes, sedans, and wagons. Some brands, such as Buick, are selling as many as three SUVs to one car, underscoring the wholesale shift away from traditional transportation choices. Some analysts see a permanent shift away from cars to high-profile vehicles and are essentially calling the segment dead. Indeed, just this past week weââ¬â¢ve heard rumors that GM may cancel two large sedans ââ¬â the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS, with even a few smaller models such as the Chevrolet Sonic possibly on the chopping block. Also, it isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This makes sense because the 2019 Avalon is based on the same platform underpinning the Toyota Camry and also shares its wheelbase with the Lexus ES Series. One reason large sedan sales are falling is because midsize sedans are taking up the slack. Todayââ¬â¢s midsize models are nearly as large as the big sedans sold 15 years ago. Theyââ¬â¢re also better made, well equipped, and affordable. Doubtlessly, the D-segment pie will continue to shrink, but there is opportunity for those who are patient. Indeed, both the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are all new for 2018, while a refreshed Hyundai Sonata rolls out. Sales of such remaining models as the Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, and Kia Optima remain strong. It is doubtful the Subaru Legacy will go away, although models such as the Mazda 6 and Volkswagen Passat may not receive an update anytime soon. 4. Gas prices are a driving factor. It was during the cultural mixing of the sassââ¬â¢s hat Leeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠shows the first acknowledgement of change for the country leadership. Although the character of Tactics exists wealth the pages of Leeââ¬â¢s creation, leaders like Tactics stand out as influential members of society, both in personal and civic relationships. While discussing the famous trial case of Tom Robinson Tactics explains to his daughter Scout the importance of valuing othersââ¬â¢ opinions when they donââ¬â¢t align with your own. He says, ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re certainly entitled to think that, and theyââ¬â¢re entitled to full respect of their opinions. But before I can live tit other folks Eve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesnââ¬â¢t abide by majority rule Is a personââ¬â¢s conscience. â⬠In attempts to also bring peace to an escalated situation President Obama shared words encouraging mutual respect. William Scott Harrow details the address given by Bark Obama focusing on Iranââ¬â¢s policy on mutual respect matters. ââ¬Å"To denounce or shrug Off call for cooperation is an easy but also a cowardly thing to do. Thatââ¬â¢s how wars begin. Thatââ¬â¢s where human progress endsâ⬠¦ A sustained effortâ⬠¦ We need to find common ground, to focus on the true we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings. â⬠As I listen to friends share memories of ââ¬ËTo Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠, a common word has been repeated by each of them, courage. Their eyes lit up with appreciation, thinking about the numerous times where Tactics demonstrated courage. Whether he was essentially forced to shoot a senile pet or fending off a crowd of angry townsmen he maintained a state of focus. It was during these times Tactics shared with his son the importance of taking a stand and having courage to lead others, even when they donââ¬â¢t all agree with you. He says totes, ââ¬Å"A mobââ¬â¢s always made up of people, no matter what. Mr.. Cunningham was part of a mob last night, but he was still a man. â⬠Instead of being angry with the dangerous group Tactics embraced compassion and faith, not fear. Keeping in mind that our economy harbors countless ideals of morality and human decency, I am reminded off quote Sarah Plain expressed during an Interview. ââ¬Å"Faith that every baby Is created for a good purposeâ⬠¦ Plain was agree with the belief that all existing humanity deserves an enriched life, but the agree to how this point of view is mandated oftentimes sits uneasy with the majority of communities. Nonetheless Plain leads other groups in harmony, sharing one direction. Tactics Finch, during his time, was not among the many. His view of public decency wa s held higher than the general person. This did not allow him, however, to lessen his sense of retribution. He so greatly believed the actions taken for one man resulted in the good for humanity. This is why so many did have respect for him. Without negating the position of others Tactics respectfully managed a mom absent of a mother for his two children. Surrounded by women with means to raise Gem and Scout, Finch chose to take an active role as a mentor and father. This compassion earned the greatest respect of all, from Scout. And as any true leader does, succession brings action. ââ¬Å"So I took an eight-year old child to bring ââ¬Ëme to their senses, didnââ¬â¢t it? That proves something-that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because theyââ¬â¢re still human. Humph, maybe we need a police force of childrenâ⬠¦ Oh children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute. That was enough. â⬠Acknowledging growth fosters the greatest forms of leadership. This story shows true life examples of how today we have the opportunity to create value from pain and injustice. Scoutââ¬â¢s connection to reality through her relationships help demonstrate the effectiveness of Finchâ⠬â¢s role as a leader. Harper Lee described Scoutââ¬â¢s experience through the sight of a child, although speaking with an educated dialect. The example led by Tactics Finch trickled down on a daily basis.
